How many channels do you need?
Car amplifier channels are made for extra speakers or subwoofer connection. For instance, a 5 channel amp can hook up to 5 different speakers instead only one being able to hook a subwoofer to a mono channel car amp. If you are looking to power a single subwoofer this is when you one get a “single channel” amp that has the wattage power to handle the subwoofer RMS watt.
Most of the time people use five channel car amplifiers when they are connection 4 door speakers and a small subwoofer up. These amplifiers are made exactly for that and are the reason why they made different channel amplifiers for this reason. You can’t buy a mono channel amp and expect to run a subwoofer and all your car door speakers.
Your typical 4 channel amps are used for upgrade car door speakers. Having some of the best car speakers in the front and rear doors will be enough bass for most people and don’t want to add a subwoofer. These types of car amps are usually lower wattage compared to your mono or two channel amps because they are designed to power door speakers. However, subwoofer requires a lot most power for the bass to hit really hard and is why they have 3-10x more watts.

The Bottom Line
It’s crucial to make sure the amplifier is going to be powerful enough. Always choose a high watt car amplifier when you’re not sure. You can always adjust the amplifier to make sound and power level just perfect. Never want to take the risk of the amp not producing enough power or it would just be a waste of your time and money. Always go high than what’s recommended from experience and also if you ever want to upgrade speakers or subwoofer.
